Film processing

C-41 film

At Lumina Labs we use Kodak Flexicolor C-41 chemistry for outstanding colour rendition, and regularly monitor accuracy with densitometry. Our well-maintained Noritsu V30 handles processing to deliver consistent, high-quality results.

Black and white film

To correctly develop your film, we use developers from HC-110 and DD-X for perfect grain and latitude. Black and white is always hand-processed. It's a no-compromises approach that gets great results.

ECN-2 film

Our ECN-2 process employs six or two-bath chemistry to ensure superb quality for your cinema film. We do not develop cinema film in C-41 chemisty.

E-6 film

We develop E6 in a 6 bath process.

Film scanning

We use industry-leading Noritsu, Frontier, and Flextight scanners to capture every detail of your film with precision. Premium film scanning services offered at Lumina Labs include:

  • flat scans

  • uncompressed TIF files for maximum quality

  • custom looks: contact us before ordering to discuss your specific requirements, and we'll ensure your vision is realised.

But I like control. I want to scan my work.

Well then, you are welcome use our equipment! We are based in bucolic Kyneton, 50 minutes from Melbourne. Take a day off and enjoy the local food and art scene while you're here. Our scanners can do everything from 135 to 4x5 . We'll provide a short tutorial, and the rest is up to you. But we'll bring you a coffee while you work. :) Contact us for rates and more information.

Finishing & packaging services

Colour matching is available for Flextight scanning services.

We offer soft sleeves for uncut rolls and professional archival sleeves for an additional charge.

Frequenty Asked Questions

  1. Place all your films into a bag, seal it, and write your name on it. Alternatively, initial your film and/or disposable camera with a Sharpie. We cross-check everything with your online order, so please initial or write your name on the film/camera clearly.

  2. Check the map for your nearest drop point location (noting also their opening hours on the map).

  3. Note that some locations have bags provided, e.g. DAS T-Shirt Automat stores.

  4. Complete an order form.

  5. Drop your bag / disposable camera into the film drop box.

  6. You will receive a confirmation email of your order.

  7. Wait for your digital pictures to arrive in your email.

Full prices and various options are on our order form.

Basic prices (per roll):

  • C41 colour negative with standard scans $18.00

  • C41 colour negative with pro scans $22.00

  • B+W negative with pro scans $25.00

  • E6 reversal from $35 with pro scans $35.00

  • ECN-2 colour negative with pro scans $30.00

Turnaround times are calcuated from when pickup your order (see locations). We often exceed these times: consider them an estimate that take into account current volumes and travel distance.

Colour negative film (c41)

  • Colour film is developed every Wednesday or Thursday. Scans are delivered the same (or next) day.

Black and white film

  • Black and white film takes 5-10 days, depending on volume.

ECN-2 cinema film

  • ECN-2 is based on the number of rolls we receive per week. Average wait is 10 days. The reason for longer turnaround times for ECN-2 is because the chemistry exhausts itself quickly and does not store well. This approach means that we will not compromise on quality when we develop your roll.

Colour positive film (E6)

  • 10-15 day turnaround.

We develop your negatives and send the digital pictures to your email address via a Dropbox download link.

The download link is valid for a month. Simply download the pictures to your computer for safekeeping, as we don't keep a backup forever.

Negatives can be returned by post, or can be collected from Kyneton by prior appointment.

We don't provide prints as part of our service.

You can take the digital scans we provide to your printer of choice on a USB stick.

For most work, we provide standard scans and pro scans.

  • Standard scans are ~50% smaller than pro scans.

  • Pro scans are provided in the highest native resolution the scanner outputs.

Scan resolution also depends on the scanner you have selected (Noritsu and Frontier), which have different capabilities. As a rough guide, pro scans for 35mm film:

  • Frontier ~5444px wide

  • Noritsu ~6700px wide

We are in the process of making a full table that will answer this question for your chosen ratio, scanner and film format.

Note that we don't interpolate the scan data or use AI augmentation.

We also have Flextight scanning priced from $15.00 per frame. Email us for this service.

We hand-process black and white. This is more time and resource intensive, and can increase turnaround times, but we feel your results are worth it.

Some labs use a roller machine or dip-and-dunk processor for black and white. These machines will use the same developer for every film type.

Our fastidiousness means we will match the correct developer to your film, bringing out its best characteristics.

We might in future, but not right now.

Colour negative film needs adequate light to look its best, and we see numerous problems with accidental under-exposure already without complicating results further with push processing. Deliberately underexposing your film is not recommended. It causes colour shifts, for starters. And film loves more photons, not less!

If you have set the ISO wrong on your camera (e.g. by 1 stop) we recommend getting your film developed as normal. In most cases, our scanners will be able to resolve a very usable image despite under-exposure.

About us

Lumina Labs, helmed by artist John Umina, is Central Victoria's top choice for expert film developing and professional scanning services.

After moving to Kyneton, John found there were limited resources for film photographers in Central Victoria. So, he started his own lab to meet his creative needs. After a while, he figured he might as well extend this high-quality service to others. And so here we are.
